"Out of the Wild" Alaska Wilderness Trek

On the morning of departure, we will meet at our house in Talkeetna at 9am for an orientation program that includes an examination of all your equipment, selecting and packing your food, your tent and your share of community gear. We have been practicing "No Trace" camping techniques for over 20 years. This is a critical element of traveling through these fragile alpine zones. We also use small aircraft for access into these remote lakes and safety in and around them is essential. We discuss bear safety and wilderness travel in areas of high bear density. We enjoy snacks and drinks and encourage questions and conversation. Our flights out are scheduled for around noon. We drive to the float plane lake, load our gear and board the aircraft for a 45 minute flight into deep Alaskan wilderness.

The plane touches down on the same lake where the filming of “Out of the Wild, Surviving Alaska”, began. You will set up your camp and take a very enjoyable long afternoon walk. In the evening, you can try your hand at fly fishing the lake for rainbow trout or arctic grayling or you can hike to a knob and glass for wildlife.

The following day, after a hearty breakfast, you will break camp, load up yo ur pack and head off in a westerly direction ascending through tundra hills and rocky outcroppings. That night, camp will be made in a high pass that offers excellent panoramic views of mountains and superb wildlife viewing possibilities.
Each morning, again, after an excellent meal, you’ll break camp, shoulder your ever-lightening pack and continue your trek to the west. You will always be on the alert to see wildlife. Caribou are very common. You will also see giant bull moose with their antlers sheathed in velvet, grizzly bears digging for parka squirrels and many species of tundra nesting birds. This is pure wilderness with scarcely a trace of human activity.

Throughout this trekking adventure you will learn excellent survival skills, fundamental river crossing techniques, competence in orienteering and you will gain a unique insight into wildlife travel corridors and seasonal migration patterns. Our wilderness treks build honest confidence in traveling remote settings. They are extraordinary learning experiences that will improve your everyday life decisions.
